Steve started training Sprint Horses in Toowoomba in the mid 1980's, racing with the professionalism demanded by  AJC Stewards.

 In more recent times Birdhouse Training Stables has concentrated on building a powerful racing team in readiness for the return of Sprint Racing.  Racing has been kept to a minimum due to the high costs of preparing horses for one-off meetings, but we decided to attend a few meetings in order to put some recent runs on the board.

 In the winter of 1998 Steve prepared Rare Edition in Toowoomba for a crack at the All Australian Derby.  Due to work commitments, he sent her to Goulburn in the care of Tom Kennedy.  To the best of our knowledge she still holds the track record set in winning the Derby.

 While living in South Australia, we made the trip to Chiltern in 2002 where More Hassells defeated Strike It Six by a length, and the Birdhouse crew took home the trophy for Trainer of the Day.

 Returning to Queensland Steve prepared a team for the 2003 Winter Series in Gympie.  On a points allocation for wins and placings, Birdhouse was the most successful stable for the Series. 

 Highlights included More Hassells defeating the 2002-2003 Sprint Horse of the Year (Fair Dinkum) to win the Queensland Sprint Plate, Sunday Son defeating the All Australian field on the first day and a Quinella in the 400m Maiden.

 Birdhouse Training Stables will be training for the public on the track in South Australia when racing commences there.
